Essential Travel Guide to Isabela Island, Galápagos

🐢 ATMs

Isabela Island features an ATM from Banco del Pacífico. However, the use of credit or debit cards is limited and often comes with high fees. Establishments that accept cards usually charge an additional 10% to 25%. It is highly recommended to bring sufficient cash from mainland Ecuador for convenience.

🐢 Speedboat Travel

The most common and cost-effective way to move between the islands is by speedboat, also known as ferries. Traveling this way is generally efficient and reliable. For those prone to seasickness, taking medication 30 minutes before departure is advisable.

Small aircraft are also an option, but they offer limited seating capacity compared to ferries.

🐢 Galápagos National Park Entry

Upon arriving in the Galápagos Islands—either at Baltra or San Cristóbal airports—you are required to pay an entry fee for Galápagos National Park. Ecuadorian residents pay $12 per person with valid ID. MERCOSUR citizens (Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Venezuela, Bolivia, and Paraguay) pay $100 per person. Other international visitors are charged $200 per person. This fee must be paid in cash upon arrival before collecting luggage, so keep the money in your carry-on, not checked baggage.

🐢 Hotels in the Galápagos

Isabela Island offers several accommodation options, conveniently located near the beach and town center. Most hotels provide amenities such as breakfast, satellite internet, and pools or jacuzzis.

Across the four inhabited islands, a wide range of lodging is available, including suites, apartments, and small or large houses for rent by the day, week, or month.

🏝️ Climate in the Galápagos Islands

The climate in the Galápagos, like much of Ecuador, is tropical and relatively stable year-round. There are essentially only two climate conditions: warm and cool.

From January to May, temperatures are generally warm, with March being the hottest month. Rain showers are more frequent during this period.

Between June and December, both air and water temperatures drop. Cold water makes wetsuits essential for aquatic activities. The cold currents help regulate air temperatures across the islands. Lowland areas receive minimal rainfall, while highlands experience light drizzle caused by coastal condensation from the interaction of cold air and warmer upper layers.

Rainfall occurs year-round but varies by location. Lowlands are dry and sparse, while highlands are lush with vegetation, except at the highest points such as Sierra Negra on Isabela Island, which remain relatively dry.
